Audience:
Beginner to Intermediate Skaters 

Lesson Duration:
Approx. 60 minutes

Lesson Overview:

This lesson introduces beginner and intermediate skaters to safe and effective skating practice. It begins with off-skate warm-ups and gradually progresses into skill development based on the week’s focus. Lessons include foundational skills every week, with an emphasis area rotating each week of the month.

Lesson Breakdown:

1. Off-Skate Warm-Up (10 mins)

  • Dynamic Stretching: Leg swings, arm circles, lunges

  • Balancing Exercises: One-leg stands, core activation drills

2. On-Skate Roll Around (10 mins)

  • General skating around the rink to build confidence

  • Beginners may start on carpeted areas or at the barrier

  • Use of roller frames is encouraged for early learners

3. Group Splits (10 mins)

  • New Beginners: Follow the Early Bird Curriculum (Kiwiskate)

  • Others: Continue skating practice or join group drills based on skill level

4. Skill Development Block (20 mins)

  • Foundations: Always included (stopping, turning, safe falling)

  • Weekly Focus Skill: Based on the schedule above (e.g., jumps, edges)

  • Rotate through 4 sets of skills, with time at each station or drill

5. Training Time (10 mins)

  • Individual or small group practice

  • Coach feedback or extra help with skills

6. Cool Down & Wrap-Up (5–10 mins)

  • Slow skating to cool down

  • Light stretching off-skate

  • Group reflection or highlight of progress

  • Dismissal / “Go Home” time
